According to a recent article in the Atlanta Business Journal, local Atlanta businesses are ramping up for some post-Thanksgiving holiday shopping events to make the most of this busy retail season and encourage local Atlanta residents to help bolster the Atlanta economy. The article reported that a survey by the National Federation of Independent Businesses and American Express found that 67% of small-business owners will offer discounts on specific items. 39% of small-business owners are planning to collaborate with other small businesses to promote Small Business Saturday. 36% will offer coupons for future offers or discounts. 33% rely on social media most to promote Small Business Saturday to their customers. 21% are planning to increase the number of employees working on Small Business Saturday. There are some great festivities sure to get everyone in the holiday spirit that are great for families and individuals alike. Here are some of our personal favorites to enjoy in Atlanta at Thanksgiving. 2013 Atlanta Half Marathon and Thanksgiving Day 5K The Atlanta Half Marathon, organized by the Atlanta Track Club, is a Thanksgiving Day tradition for thousands of runners and volunteers alike. Along with the Thanksgiving Day 5K run/walk, the Mashed Potato Mile Kids’ Fun Run and the Gravy Gallop, the Atlanta Half Marathon on Thanksgiving Day offers up something for the whole family. Veterans’ Day is November 11th

Next Monday is Veterans’ Day, which is celebrated every year on November 11th. This blog post provides background on this special day of remembrance and thanks for all our war veterans. We also have some information on some local Veterans’ Day events in the Atlanta area. Origins and Observance of Veterans’ Day Veterans’ Day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended World War I. The reason it is celebrated on this day was because the armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 to end World War I. In 1926, the U.S. Congress recognized it as a special day of prayer and thanksgiving, and it finally became a legal holiday in 1938. However, it is really become a special day to thank all veterans of all wars for their service on behalf of everyone in the United States. Observances usually include parades and church services. Saturday, October 26th is Make a Difference Day in Atlanta, Georgia

This weekend, a special day called Make a Difference Day that is dedicated to giving back to the local Atlanta community through volunteer work and charitable contributions. Make a Difference Day was created as a national event intended to promote volunteer work and community assistance across the country. We’ve uncovered some local Atlanta Make a Difference Day events to help you get involved in Atlanta volunteer work. We are also committed to community involvement and charitable contributions, including our Helping Hands program described below. Make a Difference Day Events in Atlanta The Make a Difference Day organization has a page on their website dedicated to local Atlanta events for October 26th.  These volunteer events include Food Drive for Atlanta Community Food Bank, the ARK Project of building homes for those in need, AmeriCorps and VOX Homecoming Volunteers.
