Boss’s Day is coming up quick. In fact, it’s this week so there’s not much time to think of a way to tell your boss just how much you appreciate and respect the work that they do and the guidance they provide. That’s why we are here to help with some flower, plant, and gift ideas that are sure to please. The Origins and Purpose of Boss’s Day Boss’s Day began in 1958 and became a national holiday in 1962. Patricia Bays Haroski wanted to create a day that would recognize the hard work that her boss and all other bosses do for their companies and their staff. The reason she picked October 16th was because this was her father’s birthday. While October 16th is the day each year it is celebrated, sometimes it is a day close to this date when the 16th falls on a weekend. Either way, this is an ideal time to take your boss to lunch or gift them with something that they like. Boss’s Day Gift Ideas Not sure what to get your boss that would be appropriate for them? Fall has arrived and with it the first traditional high school event of the season – homecoming. This is a favorite event every year as it welcomes back present and past students with a football game and dance. To get ready for the homecoming dance, there is a lot to think about for girls and boys, and, let’s face it, the parents who are most likely paying for that dress, tux rental, limo and corsage and boutonniere. Here are some tips on picking the right corsage and boutonniere for the big dance. Homecoming Corsages For homecoming corsages, there are a couple different types: Wrist corsages have three to four flowers that are arranged together and then tied to the wrist with an elastic band or some type of decorative strap. Sometimes, these straps are velvet, ribbon, or rhinestones. This is a very comfortable type of corsage to wear and goes especially well with strapless dresses. Pin-on corsages are the most traditional type of corsage and are pinned on the dress strap. The size and style of the corsage is otherwise similar to the wrist corsage arrangement. Nosegay corsages are actually a very small bouquet of flowers that are held. Typically, … Read More about It’s Time for Homecoming and Carithers for Corsages and Boutonnieres »

Orchids are considered one of the most beautiful flowers in the world and illustrate that a flower doesn’t have to be big to create a sublime, dramatic effect. This blog provides some background on exotic orchid plants as well as introduces you to our collection of exotic orchid plants. Types of Orchids The name for the family of orchids is Orchidaceae and its members include 30,000 different species and over 600 genera, which regularly increases as flower farmers cross breed various orchids to make even more stunning orchids. Orchids have served as a symbol for royalty and wealth because they were so rare and, as such, very expensive. Now, they are more accessible and have grown in popularity, becoming the second most popular flower after poinsettias. Orchids often cost less than other flower varieties and last much longer, making them an exceptional value. To provide a bit more background, there are different types of orchids that are most often available at flower shops: Monopodial: These orchids come from a single stem and grow upward. Examples are vandas. Sympodial: These orchids create new shoots and can be horizontal when new stems are added. Examples are cattleya or oncidium. Terrestrial: These orchids … Read More about Exotic Orchid Plants »

Walk into any southern garden lately and you’re likely to see dozens of blooming hydrangeas – their round, fluffy blossoms creating cloud-like shapes nestled amongst a green leafy sky. Hydrangeas are one of America’s favorite flower and aren’t just popular in the garden – they are frequently used in wedding bouquets and as centerpieces, and, when cared for properly can be have a long vase life as fresh-cut flowers. The hydrangea comes in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. (Did you know that you can actually change the color of a hydrangea bloom depending on the pH levels and presence of aluminum in the soil? Caring for cut hydrangeas is fairly simple as long as you remember that hydrangeas love water. To help your hydrangeas last in a vase, cut the stem every 2-3 days (under water is best). You may also try piercing a few tiny holes in the stem with a sewing needle – this will allow the flower to absorb water at a faster rate and keep the blooms hydrated. Carithers Flowers offers many elegant floral arrangements featuring the beautiful hydrangea. When shopping for your next hydrangea plant, consider Carithers Flowers Blooming Hydrangea.
