Veterans’ Day is November 11th

Next Monday is Veterans’ Day, which is celebrated every year on November 11th. This blog post provides background on this special day of remembrance and thanks for all our war veterans. We also have some information on some local Veterans’ Day events in the Atlanta area. Origins and Observance of Veterans’ Day Veterans’ Day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended World War I. The reason it is celebrated on this day was because the armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 to end World War I. In 1926, the U.S. Congress recognized it as a special day of prayer and thanksgiving, and it finally became a legal holiday in 1938. However, it is really become a special day to thank all veterans of all wars for their service on behalf of everyone in the United States. Observances usually include parades and church services. Saturday, October 26th is Make a Difference Day in Atlanta, Georgia

This weekend, a special day called Make a Difference Day that is dedicated to giving back to the local Atlanta community through volunteer work and charitable contributions. Make a Difference Day was created as a national event intended to promote volunteer work and community assistance across the country. We’ve uncovered some local Atlanta Make a Difference Day events to help you get involved in Atlanta volunteer work. We are also committed to community involvement and charitable contributions, including our Helping Hands program described below. Fall has arrived and with it the first traditional high school event of the season – homecoming. This is a favorite event every year as it welcomes back present and past students with a football game and dance. Here are some tips on picking the right corsage and boutonniere for the big dance. Homecoming Corsages For homecoming corsages, there are a couple different types: Wrist corsages have three to four flowers that are arranged together and then tied to the wrist with an elastic band or some type of decorative strap. Sometimes, these straps are velvet, ribbon, or rhinestones. This is a very comfortable type of corsage to wear and goes especially well with strapless dresses. Caring for Cut Hydrangeas

Walk into any southern garden lately and you’re likely to see dozens of blooming hydrangeas – their round, fluffy blossoms creating cloud-like shapes nestled amongst a green leafy sky. Hydrangeas are one of America’s favorite flower and aren’t just popular in the garden – they are frequently used in wedding bouquets and as centerpieces, and, when cared for properly can be have a long vase life as fresh-cut flowers. The hydrangea comes in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. (Did you know that you can actually change the color of a hydrangea bloom depending on the pH levels and presence of aluminum in the soil? Caring for cut hydrangeas is fairly simple as long as you remember that hydrangeas love water. To help your hydrangeas last in a vase, cut the stem every 2-3 days (under water is best). You may also try piercing a few tiny holes in the stem with a sewing needle – this will allow the flower to absorb water at a faster rate and keep the blooms hydrated.
